[edit] Overview

Wellesley House is a Co-educational Boarding Preparatory School for children between the ages of 7 and 13. Approximately two thirds of the children are boys.

Most of the children are full boarders but some children board weekly or attend as day children, The 7-9 year old boys have their own boarding house attached to the main school on the west side. This Junior House has its own Housemaster, Housemaster's wife, Matron and ancillary staff.

All the girls are accommodated at the Orchard, a separate house on the far side of the grounds. They too have a Housemaster, Housemaster's wife and Matron and ancillary staff. The Headmaster and his wife live in the Main School building where the 9-13 year old boys are accommodated.

The School is situated in Broadstairs about one mile from the sea. It was founded in 1869 at Conygham House, Ramsgate, and in 1898 it moved to Wellesley House which was designed and built to function as a school for children of this age. In 1964 the School became a Charitable Trust administered by a Board of Governors. The School merged with St. Peter's Court in 1969 and an extensive modernisation programme was undertaken. The School opened its doors to girls in 1977. In 1984 the Sports Hall, Music School, Art School and Craft and Design Centre were added. In 1990 the outdoor swimming pool was converted into a fine indoor heated pool. In 1999 the Centenary Building for Science and Technology was opened. The School is surrounded by 16 acres of delightful gardens and grounds which provide excellent space for sport and recreation.
