[edit] Overview

Benenden School aims to give each pupil the chance to develop her potential to the full within a happy and caring environment. We want her to feel ready to take on whatever challenges lie ahead and able to make a positive difference to the world, whether that is at work or home or both. Whilst we aim to help each girl to achieve her best possible results in public exams, we also emphasise the importance of spiritual growth and of developing as a person, in confidence, culture, compassion and social skills. We want to encourage each pupil to develop as an individual as well as a responsible and caring member of a community.

For over 75 years, Benenden has been one of the foremost girls' boarding schools in Britain. When in 1923 three mistresses from Wycombe Abbey founded the School, they set high educational standards and also wanted Benenden to be a 'happy school with personal integrity and service to others always in mind, where everyone would be given the chance to follow her own bent'. The School has remained true to those aims ever since.

A Level Results Released|18/10/2006| Every Head enjoys writing a letter which brings excellent news, and it gives me great pleasure to tell you that today we are celebrating Benenden's best ever A Level results.

This year's Six Twos have pulled off a huge achievement, beating all previous records. Last year, we felt delighted that 88.7% of the A Levels taken were passed with an A or B grade and 59% with an A grade but this year the Six Twos have passed 90.3% of their A Levels with an A or B grade, and 65% of them with an A grade. My warmest congratulations go not only to the girls but also to the staff who have given them so much support. The results are given by subject over the page, where the AS results achieved by the Six Twos are also included. Combined together, the AL and AS results achieved by the Six Twos are also our best ever, with 63.6 % passed with an A grade (up from 61% last year). Well over half of the year were awarded three or more A grades. There will be many celebrations in Benenden families this week, with delighted students and staff. There are, however, a few who have just missed the grades they wanted. They know that their Hms and the Careers Department are here to give them help and advice as they sort through their options on university places.

The Six Ones have produced a very pleasing run of AS results, with 77% passed at A or B grade. There were some individuals with outstanding results, and a few disappointments. With AS results, the students have time to turn things around, so disappointments can be turned into successes, through hard work and determination.

Meanwhile, there is much building and decorating work going on here. Hemsted and Norris are being redecorated this Summer and are already looking very smart. The remaining Cloisters' classrooms are being refurbished and the Long Corridor is being redecorated. A small extension to the Sixth Form is being built, and the Theatre is looking more like a theatre every day. A delay in planning permission meant that we were not allowed to resurface the front drive this Summer.
