Ashville teacher sets up new education charity for Malawian orphans|10/03/2006|Ashville College students have adopted a new charity this term called MOSES (Malawian Orphans Sponsored Education Scheme). It was set up by David Grainger who joined the Ashville Staff last September to teach Physics. David started the charity following a year's teaching in Malawi at St. Andrews International High School, Blantyre where he was Head of Physics. While he was there David discovered that although primary school education is free in Malawi secondary education has to be paid for. "Most families cannot afford these school fees, particularly those who have lost one or both parents due to Aids", explained David. " This means most children in Malawi never get the opportunity to finish their education". It costs less than £10 per student per month to provide secondary education and at the moment David's charity is supporting 18 students in and around Southern Malawi. Following a presentation by David to the school the students decided to raise money for the charity beginning with a collection and most recently a Year 8 Disco. So far over £350 has been raised. If you would like to know more about this charity further details can be obtained at www.malawianorphans.co.uk.
